The objective(s) of the tool

The awarding of Marie Andessner Scholarships and Prizes represents an excellent opportunity to motivate women to pursue academic careers and to offer support during various stages of these endeavors. Prizes for master’s theses in natural science are designed to encourage young female researchers, particularly in STEM subjects. Scholarship grants for doctoral and tenure-track (habilitation) candidates are intended to effect an increase in the proportion of women in the upper levels of the hierarchy and in senior university positions.

Description of the tool

Annually, two prizes for outstanding master’s theses in the natural sciences (€800), and two one-year doctoral research scholarships (€23,600) are awarded. Research scholarships for female doctoral students are particularly significant, as they enable recipients to solely concentrate on their research work for an entire year.

Every second year, a two-year habilitation research scholarship (€40,300 per annum) is also awarded. In lieu of this, two additional doctoral scholarships are presently granted each year.

How the tool works, practical experience

The Maria Andessner Prize represents a great honor and contributes significantly to the reputation of the academic nominated. By supporting the researcher in concluding her thesis, the awarding of doctoral scholarships accelerates the completion of doctorates. By now, almost all grantees have finished their degrees. Experience has shown that work towards habilitation requires extensive time frames – the habilitation scholarhip’s original one-year grant was therefore extended to two years.
