Description of the tool

In cooperation with the Administrative Department for Equality, Gender Studies & Diversity, the Vice Rectorate for Organizational Development regularly announces the Gender/Queer-CALL_mdw within the university. This proactive measure aims at effecting an increase in the production of gender/queer content at mdw’s 24 departments. Development and realization of project ideas with gender/queer content at mdw is aided by the call, resulting in the creation of projects that would not have been proposed or implemented otherwise. Members of Gender_mdw forum (https://www.mdw.ac.at/gender/plattform-gender-mdw) promote the Gender/Queer-CALL_mdw in particular. Per call, €30,000 is available p.a., funding roughly 10 projects. Concrete procedure is as follows: Funding applications can be submitted up until a deadline. Projects receiving funding are chosen by a jury consisting of the Vice Rector as well as the heads of the Administrative Departments for Equality, Gender Studies & Diversity and Research Support, respectively.

To date, a wide range of different projects have been funded, including Cinema Screening: Gender_Queer_Diversity; Master course with organist Kimberley Marshall, a complete edition of the “Travel Album/Germany – Italy 1839-40” of Fanny and Wilhelm Hensel, Behind the Horizon. Composers from Turkey and Iran; Voice – The Sonic Dimension of Gender (Part I) and the Pannonica Project (cooperation with Porgy & Bess).

How the tool works, practical experience

How the tool works:

The Gender/Queer_Call_mdw encourages people to engage gender/queer topics and invites increased integration of these topics into artistic instruction and/or academic teaching. The Gender/Queer_Call_mdw supports the members of Gender_mdw forum. Through participating in gender/queer projects, students gain new insights into the respective artistic or scientific field. The gender/queer projects work internally as well as externally (mdw concerts are accessible publicly and free of charge)

Experiences:

The CALL allows members of Gender_mdw forum – teaching staff of mdw – who previously have had few opportunities of conducting projects, to acquire new skills, giving them the self-confidence to incorporate gender/queer topics into their own teaching. However, for gender/queer projects to be sound and sustainable, intensive support from the Administrative Departement for Equality, Gender Studies & Diversity (GGD) is required.
