Relation to gender equality targets
According to the University of Vienna Development Plan for 2020, the university wishes to take measures to bridge potential career breaks (Development Plan 2020, Chapter 4.6.3). The Maria Jahoda Grant improves the chances of female scholars sucessfully returning to their academic careers during the postdoctoral phase (after performing their caring duties). The scholarship also contributes to achieving the legally mandated women’s quota of 50% at those faculties that do not yet meet this requirement on the level of postdoctoral assistants. The teaching assignment associated with the Maria Jahoda Scholarship is also intended to contribute to increasing the proportion of female teaching staff in the total number of teaching staff per institution/faculty in all categories (Plan for the Advancement of Women, Section 5: Participation in teaching, women’s quota).
The objective(s) of the tool
With the Marie Jahoda Grant, the University of Vienna aims to support highly qualified female postdoctoral researchers who had to reduce or interrupt their research activities because of care obligations in their families or close environment.
Description of the tool
The grant has been issued annually, inviting applications for its newly conceived form for the first time in autumn 2019. It is intended to support female postdocs when returning to their academic careers by allowing them to work on grant proposals/publications. In the winter semester 2019/20, a total of 10 grants set at EUR 30,000 will be awarded from the rectorate’s resources. Application is open to all female researchers, as well as to all intersexual, transgender, and non-binary researchers of all faculties/centres at the University of Vienna.
How the tool works, practical experience
The “Back-to-Research Grant” has been positively evaluated, in its newly conceived form as Maria Jahoda Scholarship it still needs to be assessed.
