Relation to gender equality targets

To help raise awareness of gender equality issues at all levels (individual, interactional, and organizational), the photo display invites reflection about one’s own attitudes and those of other students and employees. (See “Equal Opportunities Plan at TU Wien: Strategy – Objectives within the organisation”).

The objective(s) of the tool

The photo exhibit aims to enhance mutual understanding between women and men in everyday student life at a university of Technology.

Description of the tool

What does everyday student life connote in a culture that is predominantly male?

The images on display address the following themes: minority within a majority; dropping out of college; dominance; power gradients; being different as a woman; pecking order and ranking; exclusion; conforming; technology – a male domain; prejudices; demoralization and repression; the quest for individual solutions.

There also exist leaflets in size A5, including all the images from the display; these are available in both German and English.

Details concerning the exhibit’s scope:

21 images each 40×60 cm, material: photo laminate on plexiglass

1 banner 1×2 m, material: rollable plastic banner.

How the tool works, practical experience

The display has been (and continues to be) exhibited on various different occasions, including for instance the 8th European Conference on Gender Equality in Higher Education at TU Wien.

Special thanks:

A very special THANK YOU goes to Sabine Cirtek for conception and realization. And to all the students at TU Wien who contributed to the project with fantastic openness, imbuing the photos with great authenticity.
